SCAE UK Roasting Championship 2016

  • 1 min read

SCAE UK Roasting Championship 2016 returned to Glasgow, and more specifically to Dear Green's roastery, for a second year at the weekend. Spread across three days, with 14 competitors coming together from around the speciality coffee network in the UK, the competition was fierce as seven rounds took place in the battle to the top.

Many thanks go out to our co-host Coffee Nexus Ltd, and the many sponsors that made the event happen: Diedrich Roasters, Mercanta The Coffee Hunters, Falcon Coffee, IKAWA Coffee, Cropster, and Coffee Hit!

The 14 competitors spent the competition not only roasting but also grading green beans, developing roasting profiles to accentuate the desirable characteristics of the beans and the cup quality too.

Day three saw an open day to the public in the roastery here at Glasgow Collective, with public cuppings of the competition roasts and from our sponsors throughout the day.

After a long day of coffee tasting and talk, it was time to announce the winner. A close competition all round, though Matt Robley-Siemonsma of Prufrock Coffee managed to defend his title and came out on top once again this year! Matt will be representing the UK in Seoul in the World Coffee Roasting Championship. Worthy runners up came from Edgaras Justa of Vagabond Coffee Roasters, and Bartosz Ciepaj of Molecular Coffee.

Many thanks to all who visited the roastery, and took part in the competition! Until next year!
