Established in 1996 by brothers Asefa and Mulugeta Dukamo, Daye Bensa began its journey producing and supplying coffee. By 2006, they began exporting high quality coffee for the global market and they have continued to work over the years to improve and automate their systems and procedures in order to expand and improve quality. Nowadays, they are world renowned for having superior quality coffees.
Daye Bensa owns 75 washing stations and 11 dry mills across the Bensa, Aroressa, and Chire districts of Sidama. The Hamasho station is located in the highland area of Bensa and is one of the highest elevation stations, known for its distinct microclimate.
Coffees processed at Hamasho fall under their category of “highland lots,” grown above 2200m and sourced from 161 local dedicated coffee growers in the nearby areas of Bombe Chilaka, Hamasho Borena, and Keramo. The word ‘hamasho’ translates to ‘serpent’ from the local language.
Hamasho is well known for its exquisite coffee, even having placed in the Ethiopian Cup of Excellence more than once. These lots took 8th place in 2021 and impressively reached 2nd place in 2022.
This naturally processed peaberry from Hamasho was dried on raised beds for 16-20 days.
Peaberries are very small coffee beans, which develop when the coffee cherries produce only one seed, or bean, inside of their fruit instead of the usual two. This is a natural genetic mutation which occurs in around 5-10% of coffee cherries. They are named as such due to their round resemblance of a pea, as they are not flattened by being pressed up against another bean whilst growing. Peaberries are often considered to be sweeter and more complex, due to having concentrated nutrients and flavours into a single, dense bean.

Interesting peaberry with a nice sweetness. Despite some effort I struggled to get the noted profile with Chemex, V60 or espresso.
However, a natural peaberry is always worth a try. I am sure others will have a more positive experience.
Delicious, full of flavour
