We’re Going Single-Use Cup Free at our Roastery

  • 2 min read

IT’S PLASTIC FREE JULY! July marks a full month of action that encourages people to refuse single-use plastic and become part of the solution to plastic pollution, so we can have cleaner streets, oceans and beautiful communities.

For this year's month of action, we have decided to make a long-term commitment to ban all single-use use cups from our roastery & in our day-to-day lives outside of work, going forward. We also commit to banning all single use plastic from our on-the-go lunch purchases throughout July. This means no single-use plastic bottles, plastic food containers, bags, or anything else that falls under the category of single use plastic.

We know it won’t be an easy task but we have built a strategy for phasing out single-use plastic that will hopefully make the switch a lot easier. We already give all of our team a reusable cup when they join the company, and have been using reusable tubs for our local wholesale partners, which has saved over 7000 bags from landfill in the past year.

We believe that this change will not only positively impact our carbon emission reduction targets and waste reduction strategy, but also our day-to-day thinking of how we approach waste. Having committed to a circular economy approach, we try to learn to view waste as a resource, breaking the linear system of one time use.

Every day over 7 million single-use takeaway cups are sent to landfill, with the majority of these cups containing plastic liners. In 2018, we turned Glasgow Coffee Festival into the world's first single-use cup free coffee festival, and in 2023 we saved an estimated 17,000 cups from landfill, with over 85% of attendees bringing their own cups along to the fest. This year has seen a wider adoption of single-use cup free coffee festivals with Brighton & Birmingham already committed to ditching single-use cups in 2023.

Refusing single-use takeaway cups is the easiest, quickest and most impactful way to reduce single use plastic in your daily coffee routine.

Will you join us by pledging to ditch single-use takeaway cups throughout July?
