Finca Rabanales is located in Fraijanes Plateau, a coffee growing region in the southeastern highlands of Guatemala, near Guatemala City. Fraijanes is known for its volcanic pumice soil, high altitudes and abundant rainfall and Volcan de Pacaya, the most active of Guatemala’s three erupting volcanoes, supplies the region with a light deposit of ash every so often, giving the soil an important mineral boost. The region is renowned for its high quality coffee.
Rabanales is currently run by brother and sister, Rafael and Maria Elena Ventura, friends of our importing partner Coffee Bird. Coffee Bird helped introduce the farm to the specialty coffee world. Rafael and Maria Elena are two of five siblings who inherited Rabanales after ownership has been passed down through five generations. The farm was originally founded by their great-great-grandfather, Don Gregorio Zamora, who planted the first coffee trees in 1894.
“La Casona” is the 200-year-old farmhouse of Rabanales, existing since Don Gregorio first bought the farm. He decided to repair it and move in, as it reminded him of the land of his ancestors from Rabanales, in the province of Zamora, Spain. This is what inspired the name of the farm.
This particular lot from Finca Rabanales is a Catuai Amarillo, or Yellow Catuai, variety. Yellow Catuai is a hybrid of Yellow Caturra and Mundo Novo, and is known for its high yielding potential. Typically, this variety is characterised by good sweetness and a medium body. This coffee underwent white honey processing, a specific type of honey processing which leaves only minimal mucilage on the bean after pulping. The result is a very clean and bright cup, with a delicate sweetness, and often floral or citrusy notes.
