How to brew your coffee more sustainably

  • 4 min read

As a certified B Corp, we do everything we can to ensure our business and coffee is as green as can be - but there’s still a lot of waste involved in the coffee industry. No matter where, when or how you like to brew your coffee, the chances are, it could be greener. Here are our top tips for brewing with less waste and to introducing sustainable brewing habits into your daily coffee routine!

Drink from a reusable cup

This is an obvious one! But seriously we all have a reusable cup, don't we? We should be in the habit of using it as often as we can and taking control of our responsible coffee drinking habits as well as saving hundreds of thousands of single use cups from landfill or a greenwashed end of life route!

If you don't have a reusable cup what on earth are you waiting for? We give you, the one, the only, the original, KeepCup! With various colour choices and choices of plastic (not as bad an option as you think if it has constant reuse!), glass (sustainable and beautiful to drink from!) or the newest product drop from our KeepCup pals, the aluminium solution. In 8oz or 12oz options.

Start your very own reuse revolution! Grab you very own Dear Green branded KeepCup.

Choose a paperless filter!

Filters are essential for pour over, drip filter and immersion brewing methods, but that can add up to a lot of paper waste not to mention expense and the risk running out and having to remember to stock up!

Let's not even get started on the fact that many paper filters are bleached to make them perfectly white. Nowadays there are heaps of reusable coffee filters which are much better for your bank balance and are eco conscience.

The solution? Save the trees! Go paperless! Reusable filters are way better than you think and we've tried and tested them for you as not all are created equal! Here's our pick of the crop:

FOR YOUR AEROBIE AEROPRESS

The Able Disc Fine is designed for the Aerobie Aeropress. A stainless steel solution with micro precision filter. At Dear Green we've used the 'Disk Fine' for over 10 years! It allows for a very sweet clean cup of coffee with very little fines to none at all. It is thinner (just a third of the thickness of the standard) and is an essential coffee kit investment if you're a fan of Aeropress brewing!

FOR YOUR MOCCAMASTER

Upgrade this perfect piece of kit to have the ultimate bling in brewing! We give you the gold plated (oh yes!) reusable coffee filter from Moccamaster, for Moccamaster KBG and KBGT brewers! Unlike paper filters, the Goldfilter allows cafestol and other oils and fats to pass through making for a richer cup of coffee and the gold plating is completely inert meaning there is no flavour taint. Even better than that though, it's easy to clean and reusable meaning there's no waste and it'll save money on single-use filters.

Able have come up with the answer! The revolutionary stainless steel, reusable filter coneThe Kone Mini has been carefully engineered to make brewing delicious coffee at home a breeze, while living up to the rigorous standards of the best cafes. Buy coffee sustainably

We’re not so good at blowing our own trumpet - but at Dear Green we are extremely passionate about sustainability when it comes to sourcing coffee. When you buy beans from Dear Green, you’re buying from a B Corp - who responsibly sourced every bean. We can trace our coffee back to the farm it came from.  We also roast and package our coffee as sustainably as we possibly can with reusable packaging options like our Four Origins tin set.

Not only have we been audited for the highest levels of social and environmental practice, but we are also Q graders for the Coffee Quality Institute. We regularly donate to World Coffee Research and to 1% for the Planet ensuring that we are investing in the future of coffee.
