Our B Corp Impact so far!
As B Corp Month comes to a close, we thought it would be the perfect time to take a look back at our B Corp journey so far, and share a little bit about what we’ve been up to since receiving this prestigious accolade. You see, when it comes to B Corp accreditation, businesses like ours are required to meet B Corp’s standards year after year in order to maintain our B Corp status. It's an ongoing process to better the world day by day. This has motivated us to continually think about, and implement using out business as a force for good, putting the people and our planet over profit.
Since gaining our B Corp status at the tail-end of 2020, we’ve truly had a journey like no other. One that nobody could have predicted. However, despite the global pandemic, and the challenges it brought for us as a roastery, we’ve strived to use our business to make a positive impact on the world, one brew at a time. Keep on reading to find out how we’ve been doing just that.
We’ve joined World Coffee Research's Checkoff Program
World Coffee Research (WCR) is a non-profit, collaborative research and development program that aims to help grow, protect, and enhance supplies of quality coffee while improving the livelihood of the families who produce it. Joining the checkoff program means that every kilo of coffee we purchase will also receive a donation from participating sourcing partners - resulting in even more funds raised along the supply chain in support of great coffee and sustainability.
We’ve continued to reduce our mark on the planet
Whilst sustainability lies at the forefront of everything we do here at Dear Green, there is always more work to be done, and things to consider. Over the past two years, we’ve been able to fine-tune our environmental practices and experiment with new ways of doing things. For example, we’ve reduced our consumption of single-use plastics and packaging by offering zero-waste coffee buckets to our customers, experimenting with new coffee packaging, replacing plastic cable ties with reusable ones and so much more. We firmly believe that small changes can have a BIG impact on the planet and we’re pro-actively working to reduce our environmental impact day by day.
We’ve pledged Net Zero
Back in 2021, we joined more than 900 fellow B Corp companies in making a public commitment to be Net Zero by 2030 as part of the Race to Zero campaign. But we hope to achieve this goal far more quickly than that. By carefully measuring our emissions, identifying our scopes and offsetting we believe that we can do this! We’ll always keep working to move closer to our goals - and we’re thrilled to be a part of the Race To Zero campaign alongside so many other amazing B Corp companies. We’re a Real Living Wage and Living Hours employer
Being a B Corp isn’t just about looking after our planet, but ensuring its people are looked after too - this includes the amazing folk who make Dear Green so special. After all, without our brilliant team there simply wouldn’t be a Dear Green! We’re responsible for ensuring that our team earns enough to live on, that’s a biggie for us.
We’re delighted to say that we pay everyone here at Dear Green at least the Real Living Wage. You can read more about our commitment to ethics here, but in a nutshell, we’re committed to being fair employers in every way we can. We have paid the Real Living Wage since 2011, and this is part of our non-negotiable ethics. We’re part of the change in an industry that could do so much better right along the supply chain.
We’ve continued to give back
Here at Dear Green, we’re committed to donating 2% of our annual revenue/turnover to charitable organisations. From local charities and community groups like Social Bite, Green Heart Growers, The Circle and Glasgow City Mission, to causes further afield like Girls Gotta Run and and more recently, a host of Ukrainian aid charities, we're committed to giving back where we can.
We’ve continued to purchase coffee sustainably from brilliant producers
Without the amazing people who produce the tasty beans for us to roast for you, where would we be? Building long-term sustainable sourcing patterns with these brilliant producers has always been crucially important to us. Since our B Corp certification, we’ve been delighted to be able to continue to support our long-standing relationships with incredible producers like Fazenda Pantano in Cerrado, Brazil. The Rama Women’s Association in Burundi, the AMACA group of women producers in Cauca, Colombia and the delicious coffees from Tumba, Bombe and Odaco washing stations in Rwanda and Ethiopia.
We're super proud of the progress we've made as a B Corp, and look forward to making even more of a positive impact on the planet each and every year.
We hope you have enjoyed this B Corp roundup, you can read more detail in our annual Benefit Corporation Report here. We look forward to sharing even more about our journey throughout the year ahead!
